Devastators (1988, Konami)

For the GLORY, the MONEY......
and to feed the BEAST
inside their body !!!!!
DEVASTATORS

1989.
Fanatic Middle East dictator state has invaded
small underdeveloped country.
In desperation, this tiny land enlists the services of the
"DEVASTATORS".
Who are these guys? .... the best, most efficient, ruthless,
disciplined .... and most expensive 2-man team of
freedom fighters in the world.

There used to be a video store back in my hometown that sold the scummiest videos around. No one knew where these gems were procured, but it was always a fun and amazing time when they were discovered.

When the video store began to die out, they sold their stock and we ravaged the carcass like foxes. We scored such amazing finds as Warbus, Thunder Warrior, and my personal favourite, Fist of Power.

The flyer art for "Devastators" (Konami, 1988) is on par with such stinkers as could be found in the 1980s at that VHS warehouse. A John J. Rambo lookin' man and his partner, both lacquered with sweat that escaped their headbands. The entire image is orange on orange. A helicopter vaguely resembling a skull hovering over fiery death as troops and tanks stand ready.

Yet, all I can think of is how the BEAST is in their body and needs to be fed. They're obviously the most expensive 2-man team of freedom fighters in the world-- the flyer tells us so. Perhaps they're pregnant transgendered warriors. Surgery costs money, and I don't think anyone in this image comes from a country allowing for free health insurance.  Maybe that's why they fight.

In case you think that the above Japanese artwork is biased towards portraying Caucasians (re: Americans) as violence-loving action hounds, perhaps a viewing of the American artwork is in order.

Remember kids: War + Sex = Gold
